That it exists at all is amazing. Thankful it's there. It's obviously not nearly as big or fancy as other airports, but it gets the job done. Very interesting to watch all the locals at baggage claim pick up everything they checked through that they bought elsewhere due to the availability and lower price (example - 10-pack of toilet paper, lots of black and yellow bins full of stuff, etc.)

There is charm in the shared experience, and even as everyone is crowded together anxiously awaiting their baggage and then to call the various taxis to get the hell out of the cold (only room for so many to wait in the heated terminal), you can feel the community, and that people, perhaps despite the contrary sometimes, do care and look out for one another (like the older lady who asked if I had a cab yet).

I am here to donate clothes and books to people and organizations in need. Hopefully the first of several trips.

It's a small, but valuable airport, and a place to begin making memories in the desolate US Arctic.

Manage your expectations, after all it's a tiny remote airport serving a small community. Typically, there is only one passenger flight operated by Alaskan Airlines in and out per day. However, once a week a smaller passenger jet will depart for Anchorage on Monday or Tuesdays. I'd recommend catching the smaller flight if possible because the daily flights can be packed.

If you have time before departure, I'd recommend dropping off your bags a few hours early then leaving in order to avoid the mad rush. Expect to wait in line for a while to depart as the airport is very small.

Arriving is worse, especially if you have checked bags. I've waited over 2 hours for my bags at Barrow despite Alaskan Airlines timeliness guarantee.

It might be small, but it has top of the world charm. Amazingly friendly staff, helpful team, and honest service with smiles. This team does great things with little to no gear, ultra tight spaces, and dated facilities. Be patient, be kind, and enjoy the charm.

This is a very small airport but I have been in smaller ones. The staff is very professional given the physical limitations of the facility. Seating is limited as there is only one gate. Leaving the airport was very efficient, however ARRIVING was a different story.

The authorities go through every bag once it is unloaded from the plane and before they release them. The process takes over an hour. My hotel, the King Eider Inn, even suggested that I go across the street to the hotel and check in while waiting for my bags. I guess they are checking for drugs or large amounts of alcohol as it is controlled here.

Small and the only airport located in Arctic Circle in North America. Just one flight flies in from Anchorage and one flight flies out from Barrow to Anchorage everyday.
