This was a brewery/foodery I was super excited to try. Bff and I decided to do so before we took our husbands. Walked in, and it's VAST and CAVERNOUS. It's 1130am and only one other couple there. Hmmmm. Ok! Our server, Amy, is spot on and friendly 👍. Bff orders a cosmo and I opt for a Moziac IPA. Drinks arrive. My anticipated new brew is in a tepid glass BUT the beer is hoppy and makes me happy! Bffs cosmo is fine. We both order the tomato soup and Kansan salad. The soup was absolutely DIVINE. Thick, piping hot and loaded with flavor! The salad? See the photo what I pulled out. Bff sent hers back and ordered the wings. At this point, you'd think a manager would come to our table and TRY to assess and correct the situation. ALAS! it did not happen! The wings tasted like someone overcooked them, stomped on them and then slapped them on a plate with a prayer. Maybe those chickens led a tough life because they were TOUGH. Just ghastly. Fyi, it is now noon and there are literally 2 other tables occupado. That's a telling tale. The bathrooms are spotless and well stocked. Also, they have a 2% surcharge for a credit card which totally frosts my crapper. Tell me up front please. Excited going in and bad taste going out.

I’m all about flavor and our dishes were lacking some. Very disappointed. Finally tried after 3 years living here and what they say is true… food is overpriced. Only plus was the pretzel board, I’d give it 4 stars.

Great food and service! Neat atmosphere with attractive design. Several bar bite options and shareable plates along with vegetarian options! Interesting beer list with something for everyone's taste! Fantastic place to grab a bite and hang out! Nice outdoor seating area with heaters, perfect for Kansas in the winter!

Scampi a bit skimpy. We went for lunch, 7 people on terrace. Service ok but food nothing special. Shrimp scampi was quite oily and not very tasty. My son's cheeseburger was overdone. Lots of space inside. Clean bathrooms. Seems more like a better place for drinks than dining

Black Stag Brewery is another great excuse to just hang out in Lawrence. Just an all around solid beer selection, food, atmosphere, and service. Looking forward to some summer nights on the patio with a nice cold one, my wife, and a few good friends.

Staff was friendly & knowledgeable about beer pairings. My friend & I had a flight of dark beers which was much more enjoyable than picking just one. You can order a small glass to taste of any beers, which worked out well since my Fish & Chips was much tastier with a lighter beer. Btw, the fish was delicious; the breading was thin and crisp. Also tried the beef stroganoff. Yum! Now that paired well with our dark drinks. The entrees were enough to fill both of us up so no sides or starters. The only sad part was the limited dessert menu. I was surprised at how well the seating was laid out with lots of booths & half booths. The place is fairly large for the intimate setting it creates & we had no trouble talking while people watching. You aren’t crammed up next other diners and the wait on a weekend night was only 10 min for 2 people. We really lucked out with parking by finding an opening directly in front of the doors. The outside seating looked inviting if only it was a warmer night. This was a perfect place for our first night out in Lawrence. All in all very clean, well staffed, delicious food & beer and if you’re lucky parking is excellent. It is all paid parking before 5ish. Even if you don’t drink it is a restaurant worth trying. I would say also a great place to meetup with friends.

I enjoyed the space - so many wonderful paintings and pictures, plus fun games if you need to entertain your group. The beer was good but nothing extraordinary. We had the stouts and sours and enjoyed drinking them. Food was underwhelming. I ordered a salad and it definitely wasn’t what I expected (especially for the price mark). My partner had steak frites and wasn’t impressed with it either. We both really loved the sweet potato fries - they were crispy and not greasy. Overall, it was a pleasant experience but I don’t think I would come back for food.

Response to Black Stag as I’m having a hard time locating the reply button 😅

I think I was mainly thrown off by thick uneven slices of cucumbers, the vinaigrette was great though. Some tomatoes had stems, as well, so that was another thing. In grand scheme of things it was a good salad, just not what I expected 🙂
My partner had steak frites, not filet mignon- my bad!
