I would love to give this place a strong 4 stars, because of front desk staff, spacious room, amenities etc. However, we had 2 service glitches that were very inconvenient. Mainly, we had only luke warm water the first evening. No much needed hot shower. A very nice maintenance man came, worked indoors and out and told us we should have hot water soon. Nice and hot in the morning, but luke warm again in the evening. We were in Room 57. |Also, there was no back up roll of toilet paper. When we found ourselves dangerously we called and were told someone would bring it over. No exact time frame was mentioned. But after an hour my husband went over to get it himself. Not a big deal, but there should have been a back up roll! |Otherwise a fine place to stay. And you may not have any glitches!

Loved it, however look out for room 8 - it smells because the toilet is not secured. I was disappointed that we were assigned room 8 when they’ve known for months that it smelled. Fortunately, I was reassigned to another, better room once I complained.
The canyon tours are amazing.we enjoyed the Navajo tacos and blue corn pancakes very much.

The room was your basic US hotel room. What was nice about this place is that it’s out of the way and peaceful and quiet. The coffee brewed in reception each morning was strong and delicious. We didn’t eat in the cafeteria on location - the food looked decent enough it just had a school canteen vibe. The gift shop by reception was particularly good.

Lovely place, lovely staff, such a great serene atmosphere! Food at the cafeteria is excellent, and you can’t possibly miss their canyon tour. You will spend hours exploring the bottom of a canyon, it’s history, archeology and nature. It’s like being in a parallel universe, an incredible experience. Highly recommended!!

Really nice Lodge, room spacious, clean, comfy. Right at the entrance to the Canyon. Lots of parking, safe location no worries about stuff in the car. Very nice place! Plus pet friendly 🙂

I Wholeheartedly recommend both the lodge and their canyon tour. The lodge is a happy and peaceful place, the rooms have everything you need, and the cafeteria, a locals’ favorite, serves the best frybread! But nothing could have prepared us to the stunning beauty of the canyon. We took the 3 pm tour and spent 4 magical hours on the bottom of the canyon, admiring the old Anasazi houses, the gorgeous petroglyphs, the bright green vegetation that grows out of the red rocks, and we learned about the history of the Navajo people, who fought so hard to come back to their ancestors’land and who, despite all efforts to erase them, are now a vibrant community that treasure their heritage and have so much to teach the world about how to respect our environment. Thank you David, our wonderful guide, and thank you to all the lovely Thunderbird staff, this visit was the highlight of our vacation.

We loved our stay at the Thunderbird Lodge and our visit on Navajo Nation - we really enjoyed the laidback vibe, the cafeteria style dining, the very cool trading post store, the well kept grounds (which felt like an oasis in the desert), and the wonderfully kind and helpful staff most of all. We highly recommend a visit to Canyon de Chelly (we booked our tour through Canyon de Chelly tours and it was fantastic - but you can also book tours directly through the hotel). Thunderbird Lodge is the only place to stay when in Chinle.

We also want to share our deepest gratitude to the incredibly honest staff of the Thunderbird Lodge who found our camera which we accidentally left behind and saved it for us to pick up the next day. We are so grateful and even more of a reason we will return. We cannot recommend Thunderbird enough if you are in this part of the country - it is worth the effort to explore and learn.

Excellent place. A peaceful place to be when visiting Canyon de Chelly and surrounding areas. The staff was friendly, accommodating and helpful. The cafeteria has good local cuisine like Navajo tacos and fry bread. The lodge used to be a trading post, so the gift shop is bigger than you'd typically expect and contains pieces from local Navajo artisans. We would definitely come back next time we're in this part of the southwest!
