This past Wednesday was the second time in almost 20 years that I found myself in need of some help with food for my family. I decided to utilize the Food Bank that is at the Canyon del Oro Assembly of God on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings. When it was my turn, I pulled my car around and had a couple of church youths help load three large boxes of food into my car. They smiled at me, and I thanked them, and another gentleman who seemed to be affiliated with the church. I made it home and proudly started bringing the food up to the house. Everyone was happy....until we saw what was given to us. Garbage. They loaded us up with three boxes of literal garbage. The produce box had rotten, molding fruit. Cucumbers you could bend in half and a watermelon that had seen its day many days prior. My fingers went right through the avocados when I tried to pick them up. Bread. The bread was all clearance items that never sold, that had passed their sell by date by at least a week. The Blueberry muffins were covered in mold. Yogurts (dairy products) all expired at least by 7 days. I looked at the Beef broth that was given to us that had expired over four months ago. I was offered chicken gizzard or chicken livers. I declined, but ended up with two bags of freezer burned catfish and expired frozen ground pork. Expired Lunchables with the 25 cent clearance tag on them that no one would buy were grabbed at by my kids, then quickly tossed away. Two bags of rice, four 1lb bags of raisins, and a couple cans green beans were all that was salvageable.

I have since made it to payday, and there is food that I bought in my refrigerator. I don't know what the people at Canyon del Oro Assembly of God church were thinking. If you want to help people, help people. They however, chose to hand out spoiled, expired, moldy, rotten food, that they knew was going to feed hungry children. Thanks for nothing.

The food pantry was a major disappointment. Arrived at 9 a.m. which is the time it starts. 45 minutes later, sitting there with number 21 when they were at number 11, I realized they were completely out of beans and rice. I guess I'll try somewhere else.
