The Kanis Road widening project has been an absolute nightmare for those of us who live and work in the area. The contractors don't seem to comprehend that there are OSHA safety rules in place for a reason. They either kept the sidewalks closed or obstructed with signs and barrels on both sidewalks and failed to give pedestrians a safe path, away from the work in progress. This is a well traveled road not only for cars but also for pedestrians and bike riders. They often left deep holes unprotected without a safety fence or cones, which is very unsafe for pedestrians. There's still a deep hole on the corner of Michael and Kanis that they've left unmarked for pedestrians to come along and fall in. I have a visually impaired neighbor who takes the bus and he has had a very difficult time because they failed to leave pedestrians a safe path to travel. The bus stop sign was taken down when they were tearing up the concrete and it didn't get put back up when they finished. The contractors kept warning signs on the sidewalk for months so if anyone in a wheelchair or mobility scooter needed a safe path to travel, they would be screwed. The road crews consistently leave huge rocks and gravel in the road and on the sidewalk. They parked their equipment on a busy street without any cones or warning signs or anything. I witnessed a driver run head on into the CAT equipment that was parked on Kanis Road and of course it destroyed the front end of her car. I realize that there may be a communication barrier with some of the contractors and I also realize that they may have independent contractors who don't work directly for Redstone but that's why a foreman or supervisor should survey the area every day to make sure the crew is following OSHA safety rules. There is nothing I hate more than people who don't care about the people in the community where they're working. They are required to leave enough room for a wheelchair to get through on the sidewalk or pedestrian path. It's not supposed to be a place to store signs and barrels but this crew did whatever they pleased. I will be so glad when this work is finally finished.
