This is a fascinating place to explore whether you are into history or not! Shelby was once a booming town with a huge ironworks facility, hotel and train depot. Sadly the hotel recently burned down but there is great little museum and the ruins of the incredible hulking ruins of the ironworks are still there. The best day to go is for the Shelby Ironworks Festival and car show which is held every year October (one day event)

This is a great park to wander around and feel history. Visit while there's a festival or the monthly pancake breakfast and you can tour a museum, old schoolhouse, and get something from the gift shop. During a festival, volunteers run the blacksmith shop, sawmill, and make sorgum syrup. The Shelby County Historical Society is working on a self-guided history trail of the grounds. That will be amazing!

A neat place. The ore can be picked up off of the ground, and comes in form of these shiny green lumps.
