Doug Lambert of Squareroot Construction built this beautiful deck for us in the late summer of 2022. We were replacing a 40-year old west-facing deck that baked like a griddle in the afternoon sun, and so was pretty much unusable during the summers. It took us many months to negotiate the mysteries of the city Permitting system, but in the end it was worth the wait.

Doug gave us a wide choice of materials, color and style, while making sure that the end result would meet code, be low-maintenance, have great longevity, and be an outdoor haven even in mid-summer. After all that, Doug still brought the job in at a great price - the best of all the quotes we received. He is flexible about mid-project changes and completely straight and honest about costs. When you work with Doug you are paying for materials and for his time and experience - not for fancy trucks and advertising.

We used natural-stained cedar for the structural members and pergola, and Fiberon "Ipe" composite materials wherever possible. The on-deck pictures were taken right after completion. You can see the hand-built "pig wire" railings Doug made for us. They serve as a footing for the climbing plants we are training to grow up the sides of the deck. The last picture shows how successful that effort was during the summer of 2023, as the clematis and trumpet vine are almost covering the outside of the deck. Thanks to all Doug's thoughtful advice and ingenuity, our new deck is shady, cool and welcoming even on the hottest summer afternoons, while looking great year-round. We're thrilled.

The only cons? Doug may have helper or two, but it's a very small crew. This means your project will take longer than it would with a big firm. Also, they don't waste time (and charge you extra) to whisk away every nail, board and tool every night. Instead tools and materials will be left around the site, so you should expect some level of constant mess until the project is finished. In my opinion that's a fair trade for the excellent price.

Working with Squareroot is like hiring your uncle who is in the construction business. Doug will work with you personally on every aspect of the project from design through completion, and will be on the site every day to swing a hammer. My favorite way to do business. 🙂

We love our deck, which Doug completed last summer. Most notably, Doug's quality of work is very high and he is a master deck builder that focuses on quality and durability. This was evident in small details like color matching the screws to the our decking. He also did some awesome work doing custom routing of the railing to fit an Govee LED light strip I wanted, which looks awesome at night as you can see from the pics.

Doug built a deck for me and did a fantastic job. It was for a home I had in Firestone at the time. The covered porch added much needed shade for that side of the house and provided an outdoor living space I was able to enjoy with my son when he was very young. He was very fair on the pricing and the materials still look great all these years later. His craftsmanship and especially his design work, were outstanding. I would highly recommend him to do any job, big or small.

I worked with Doug on two projects over the years, the addition of a new deck expansion , the construction of a large gazebo and then the replacement of three other original decks after many years of use. His work was always top notch and made with addition design details that added to the visual qualities of his work. I would highly recommend Doug for any deck project, big or small.

Great experience with Doug replacing a deck that was rotting through. We extended the footprint a bit, had to work around a lower-level fire escape, and it needed all new footers, and Doug and his crew did it on time and for significantly less than some other outfits I talked to, and 4 years later, it's holding up fantastically well. Cannot recommend Squareroot Construction enough.

Doug, the owner, Blake and Robin built a beautiful composite deck. The threesome worked diigently and continuously (weather permitting) and finished the project in a timely fashion. Doug is proactive and played a key role in getting the permit from the Boulder planning department.

Doug and his team built a fairly large deck for us on the back of our home in 2019. Doug had (at the time) a fairly small crew but they all were dedicated and very knowledgeable. He went above and beyond to meet the demands of the difficult design and the outcome was beautiful. He worked with me on design tweaks and material changes, offering up better options that were more reasonably priced (Down to a personal design of his on railings that saved me big money and was even better than the first option). But the biggest thing about Doug is he is EXTREMELY HONEST!! He will tell you straight up exactly everything and never sugar coat anything or beat around the bush. AND when I needed him to tweak something (warranty items), he would always call me back, always. He even put me to the top of his list 3 years later when I wanted to do some additional work. You cannot find that kind of support anymore in this industry.

Doug and his assistant completed the deck in adverse conditions. The project started in Jan/Feb 2022, so weather was a factor. His work is exceptional and is a result of his years of experience. He adhered to our requests and modifications. We are very pleased with the deck and the quality of his work.
